Despite the low, cold temperature that swept across Melbourne on Wednesday evening, spirits and competition soared for the second round of the League cup. Team Elite had the biggest win of the night, finishing with a significant 40 points – an incredible 25 point win over their opponent, Team Ivan. Similarly, Second Timers scored a 23 point lead over Trinity Racing, while Driving Miss Daisy beat Elevensies with a slim 5-point margin
Race 1: Driving Miss Daisy defeated Elevensies
It was a close match, with both teams vying to outdo each other on the track.
Michael Gangi from Driving Miss Daisy took out the double once again with pole position and the race win. Alex Gilmore from Elevensies, qualified fourth, despite fighting hard to gain the third place on the track. A mere 5 points separated the two teams – it’s already looking to be a healthy rivalry between these groups this season.
Race 2: Second Timers defeated Trinity Racing
It was a clear victory for Second Timers, who was last year’s League winners. A great display of racing by Nathan Pannunzio (Second Timers), who qualified third but showed his skills when the flag dropped to come out on top for the win.
Viv Dilkes-Frayne from Second Timers showed promise, qualifying first with the fastest lap of the night at 38.671 seconds. Unfortunately, he finished fourth in the race.
Despite still being early days, Trinity Racing will have to improve when they come up against Team Elite next round.
Race 3: Team Elite defeated Team Ivan
The third and final race displayed some nail-biting close calls between team mates. Jamie Russell (Team Elite) took out the win from comrade Kevin Che by only 0.022 seconds.
Despite this, Gavin Fitzpatrick from Team Ivan nailed the race laps of 39.218 seconds.
With a massive 26 points separating the two rivalries, Team Ivan will have to regroup to be in fighting form for the next rounds.
